MOHS Micrographic Surgery

MOHS Surgery — Fort Gratiot, MI — Hamzavi Dermatology & Dermatology Specialists

The Benefits of Mohs surgery

It is impossible to tell how deep the “roots” of a skin cancer extend below the surface of the skin just by looking at it. During Mohs surgery, doctors use a microscope to establish the precise extent of a skin cancer growth and remove only tissue that has cancer in it.

In this way, we can remove as little healthy tissue as possible while making sure that we have removed all of the tumor.

Benefits include:

  • Minimized scarring
  • Highest cure rate possible
  • Improved cosmetic outcomes on visible parts of the body like the face and hands
  • Procedure typically completed in one visit

How Mohs Surgery Is Performed

The area surrounding the tumor is numbed and a small piece is removed. A map of this tissue is made using a microscope to determine the exact location of the tumor. Subsequently, only tissue determined to contain cancer cells in this map are removed and then further mapped to detect cancer cells. The process of mapping and removing only cancerous regions is repeated until no cancer remains.

Treatments We Offer
