What is it?

The Q-Switched Laser is a device used to eliminate undesired brown spots, sun freckles, or tattoos from your skin. The energy pulse from the laser releases the pigment into the skin so it can be naturally reabsorbed and disposed of by the body.

Do I need this treatment?

If you have isolated colored spots, whether large or small, and you’d like these to be removed, then this treatment certainly will help. However, we must stress that this treatment is exceptional for removing a handful of spots. This laser is also very effective against sun spots on the chest, arms or legs.

How does this treatment work?

The laser removes undesired brown spots, sun freckles or tattoos by emitting energy pulses in a laser which releases the pigments into the skin, allowing the body to naturally absorb and dispose of the particles. When the laser is working it feels like numerous tiny hot dots on your skin. While the discomfort is greatly reduced by cold air upon the spot being treated, it doesn’t eliminate it completely. In terms of tattoo removal, the process without anesthesia is very painful, so it is recommended to anesthetize the area of treatment before proceeding with any tattoo removals.

What are the benefits?

A single treatment typically removes anywhere from 75-100% of a single brown spot, whereas a second or third treatment (a very rare occasion) may be needed to neutralize the color completely.

Any risks?

A red or brown spot may appear when the treated sun freckle is gone and the crust heals. However, this new spot is temporary and usually goes away on its own but it can be treated if it persists. Infections and scars are rare, but proper skincare and avoiding the sun are important. Prior to treatment, the risks and side effects will be discussed with you by your cosmetic coordinator and your medical provider.

What can I expect after treatment?

Should you have any history of cold sores or herpes, be sure you alert your provider as the energy from the laser could cause the virus to re-activate. Also, be aware that there will be crusts over the treated area from anywhere from a few days to up to 2 weeks (3-4 if on the legs). It is highly recommended that you use regular Vaseline or petroleum jelly and keep the area covered as this speeds up the healing process. Though you’re able to use make-up to cover the treated area if you so choose, it may not work appropriately or could prove difficult to hide. Otherwise, no further preparation is required after treatment.
